I wanted to make szarlotka,
I found the recipe*- it shouldn’t be hard at all.
I grated six tart apples,
I squeezed out some juice and sprinkled them with cinnamon.
I even made the crust-
No shortcuts, completely from scratch:
2 cups flour, 2 sticks butter, ¼ cup sugar,
1 egg, 2 tsps baking powder, and a pinch of salt.
I had fun kneading it into a round ball,
Before chilling it. Then I grated ¾ of dough into the pan,
I covered it with apples, topped with the rest of dough,
And baked it at 350F, for an hour or so.
It wasn’t hard indeed, it wasn’t hard at all.
It was time to taste my Polish apple pie-
I took a bite and I instantly knew
My szarlotka wasn’t bad at all,
But, Mom, it wasn’t made by you.
